Have You Seen My Toenails?

We landed in Indonesia two months ago today.  So at breakfast this morning I stated,  "Generally speaking, I think we are all doing quite well to say we have been here two months."  Andrew, without skipping a beat declared with a hint of sarcasm, "Mom, how can you say that?  Have you seen my toenails recently?"  I know this may seem totally off the wall, but we all started dying laughing and all of us peered through the glass table to peek at Andrew's toenails, which look pretty typical for an 11 year old. : )  There is strength in the humor of a family and the prayers!

So after great breakfast discussions.....it was off to school.  They are pouring on the homework and the boys are groaning quite loudly.  I'm proud of them for hanging in there with these college level classes.  Jacob and Nathaniel are starting to talk more and more Indonesian words.  It is hysterical listening to them play with Lego's or Play Mobile, they are intertwining Indonesian culture and words in their role playing.
Today we grocery shopped.  Our grand purchases that delighted all was an electric bug zapper (like a tennis racket).  When you whack the bug it makes a great zapping noise and is quite addicting.  Also a hand crank blender.  So tonight we made fruit smoothies...........everyone wanted a turn cranking.  How long do you think that novelty will last?  I was THRILLED to find cilantro in the grocery store today.  A first!!!!  So we also made fresh salsa in the "blender".

My house helper is in Jakarta this week, so I am back to mopping and scrubbing.  In many ways I like cleaning my house.  However, it is also very nice to have help.  We are also going to hire another student, Don, who will take care of our yard and teach the boys soccer skills (the Indonesia guys are incredibly nimble).

MMMMH.......Fresh Mangoes, bananas and water!

This little gecko is visiting for a while......these little guys can make  an incredible amount of noise.
It's 8:10 p.m. and everybody else has already gone to bed.  I better follow as the Muslim call to prayer is our alarm clock at 4:15 a.m.....

    We have that same bug zapper! ;-) Nate LOVES it and runs it down on batteries OFTEN!

    David's sister brought us home that zapper from Asia as well. It was a big hit with David and all the neighbor kids! ;) Glad to hear the humor is there for your family. It sounds like you are really settling in at only two months!

    Love the "zapper" I think it would be loads of fun, too! I do love the humor....somehow I could just see it! The mango, banana smoothie sounds yummy. Glad everyone is settling in....Miss and love you all!

Change Never Happens Fast, Except Today it Did

Today (Wednesday, Nov. 1),  Darron and Gary were leaving on an afternoon flight to the Philippines.  The nicer of our two cars had just been picked up from the repair shop ( it was an alternator this time).  They are at that stage.  Always, something falling apart.  With the mission mobile, we can’t complain.  It is 21 years old!!!!  Darron just popped down to the hanger to fill up the tires with air and I heard him pip the horn at the gate, to indicate he was read to go to the airport.  Yet, he had a different message.  The tire needed repaired…..or more probably replaced. Groan.  There is ONE thing, I disdain as a woman and that is handling car problems.  It’s hard enough to do it in your home country and a language you are fluent in.  Try doing it in a foreign country.  Also to me, it is a MANS world.  If you want to plop me in my discomfort zone, tell me I have to get the car fixed. Anguished Hearts

Image after image flashes through my mind.  I see little but “growing bigger and stronger” two and half year old Azarya coming towards me on the gravel runway.  Wanting to give me a high five and nothing warms my heart more.  Knowing that this is the little boy who drank his way back to life with goats milk.  More images of all over campus this little boy waving at me and smiling shyly, running and playing like normal children should.  Every time I saw him, I rejoiced in the second chance that Jesus had given him.  More images of being with his Mommy and Daddy and their JOY and gratefulness in Ayarya’s strength and change as he transformed before their eyes from being severely malnourished to vibrant.  Ida, his Mommy, is my closest Papua friend, and I see so many images of her and I chatting and laughing together and enjoying her new fat little baby boy, now two months old.  Despite that Ida was still morning the unexpected loss of her father and still mourning the loss of her first ch
